The visual resemblance to its predecessor should not be misleading: The Range Rover V L460 Series is the firstborn of an all-new Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) platform. Changes in the chassis are global: the rear four-link suspension gave way to a five-link suspension, the double wishbones in the front are different, the roll suppression system is not hydraulic, but electric. In addition, the SUV has acquired a fully steerable chassis, and the steering rear axle (steering angle — up to 7.3 degrees) is included in the basic package, due to which the turning radius has been reduced to 11 meters.

The overall dimensions have grown: Range Rover is 35 millimeters taller and 53 millimeters longer. At the same time, the larger body became one and a half times stiffer in torsion and added in streamlining: the drag coefficient was improved from 0.34 to 0.3 — this is the best result in the segment. It was possible to add more due to the abandonment of traditional door handles (now only «secret»), reduction of gaps between parts, active aerodynamic elements (brake air ducts open only when a certain temperature is reached), and the main contribution was made by the «flat» bottom with protective screens.

At the first acquaintance, the impression is made by the lanterns — they are so thin that even the reverse indication lamps did not find a place (they are located at the bottom of the bumper). However, in reality, headlights are considered to be breakthrough: the diode pattern is almost unchanged, but adaptive digital optics are able not only to automatically change the intensity and direction of the light beam, but also to project prompts onto the road (for example, from a navigator). Interestingly, the turns are highlighted not as the steering wheel is turned, but proactively — the electronics requests data from the navigation system in real time.

The engine is still longitudinally positioned, and the stake is on the Ingenium turbo range, but otherwise the power plants are completely different. Fuel economy and environmental concerns are at the forefront, as the entire MLA architecture is designed with gradual electrification in mind. However, Land Rover will be flexible and offer its range of units in different markets. In Europe, these will be plug-in hybrids based on a 3.0 inline gasoline turbo engine (440 and 510 horsepower) with a traction battery with a capacity of 38.2 kilowatt-hours and an electric power reserve of up to 100 kilometers. In the US, two petrol options will be offered — a mild hybrid based on the same 3.0-liter «six» (400 horsepower and 550 Nm) and a 4.4-liter V8 (530 horsepower and 750 Nm).

Turbodiesel 3.0 will be brought to Russia in two variants of forcing (D250, 249 forces and 600 Nm; D350, 350 forces and 700 Nm), as well as a gasoline V8 4.4 (530 forces, 750 Nm). Rumors were confirmed: all over the world, top Range Rovers really switched to a gasoline twin-turbo V8 N63 from BMW, and the engine is exactly the same as on the X7 M50i crossover, except that the calibrations are different (for the sake of convenient traction control on the road), and the pallet is original (to avoid oil starvation when storming uphills). The fastest Range Rover so far reaches 100 km / h in 4.6 seconds, but a more powerful and agile «charged» version will appear later.

As for the transmission, a surprise awaits fans here — there is no more permanent all-wheel drive, and the front axle will begin to be connected through an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch. However, when starting from a standstill, the clutch will always work with preload, but at speeds over 35 kilometers per hour (and up to 160 km / h) when driving on the highway, power will be transmitted only to the rear axle — this will improve efficiency in highway mode by thirty%.

Still, it’s not worth writing the «fifth» Range Rover into crossovers: the clutch is tested on a Land Rover Defender, and off-road the novelty should not fail, because the two-speed transfer case, and the active rear differential, and the 8-speed «automatic» ZF the same as that of the current SUV, and all this set is already available «in the database».

The standard equipment also includes air suspension, so the ground clearance is adjustable over a wide range — from «parking» 110 millimeters to «off-road» 235 millimeters. If you «stand on tiptoe», then there will be 295 millimeters under the bottom, but all the moves will be selected. But the depth of the ford is a solid 900 millimeters, and for this indicator Range Rover is unmatched among full-size SUVs.

In 2014, Land Rover opened up a new segment of off-road limousines with the Range Rover LWB with a wheelbase increased by 20 centimeters. The new SUV retains the long version of the Long, and the difference between the long and short wheelbase is the same. However, all Range Rovers have become more spacious, regardless of the version, because in comparison with the previous generation, the wheelbase has grown by 75 millimeters, of which 20 millimeters is a «pure» increase for the second row passengers’ legs.

The usual three-seater rear sofa is now transformable — the outer sections can be displaced longitudinally, the angle of the backrest can be changed in the range of 16 degrees, an ottoman can be ordered (previously it was the prerogative of the top version of SVAutobiography), and the center section can be turned into a comfortable armrest. There is also a more luxurious version of the SV with separate rear seats, ventilation, massage — such SUVs have an 8-inch touchscreen built into the armrest, and VIPs have two 11.4-inch tablets with HDMI outputs.

The main innovation is the appearance of a three-row salon according to the 2 + 3 + 2 scheme. Access to the «gallery» is automated (the second-row seat folds up and goes up), and the last row even has heating! A seven-seater Range Rover can only be a long wheelbase, so the third row should be convenient not only for transporting children. Traditionally, the owner of a Range Rover can use the tailgate for a picnic — two seats are provided, and the lifting section of the trunk will protect the meal from the sun.

«Aristocratic» options have been expanded — from now on, by overpaying for the Range Rover SV, the buyer will be able to choose exquisite aniline leather or wool for finishing, order an audio system with as many as 35 (!) Speakers (through which the active noise cancellation system is implemented) and giant 23-inch wheels. However, the visual differences of the SV-version are not great — you can unmistakably recognize the most expensive configuration by the radiator grille, front bumper, a special combination of colors and decor.

Driving interfaces are less impressive, because the front of the flagship has changed evolutionarily. Remained architecturally the same climate control panel with touch buttons and a pair of washers; The PiviPro media system can operate in parallel from two SIM cards, but most of the functions will have to be activated through a curved 13.1-inch touchscreen, which for the first time in Land Rover history has been added tactile response.

A 13.7-inch virtual dashboard, a head-up display with augmented reality, an in-salon mirror with a built-in screen, wireless charging for gadgets, all-round cameras (with the ability to «look» under the front bumper) — equipment that no longer surprises in the premium segment …

From unusual technical solutions — ultrasonic sensors built into the door (they will prevent you from accidentally hitting the sash when opening); the ability to automatically close the driver’s door by pressing the brake pedal and the car park operator from a smartphone (an SUV will be able to take the right place without a driver, which is useful in tight parking lots).

The new Range Rover will be produced in England, as before, with the SUV appearing in Europe this winter. The Russians will have to wait until spring, and the richly equipped SV modifications will not reach dealers at all until summer. In France, the new product has risen in price by 12-28%, and in our country the increase in price may be even more significant. Land Rover sees the top versions of the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 (from 16 470 000 rubles) as a competitor, and the British flagship will definitely not be cheaper.
