Low weight and sophisticated handling are the gold standard for all MX-5 / Miata generations, and Mazda engineers intend to maintain both characteristics in the new NE generation. The main innovation will be the transition to the engine of the SkyActiv-X line — a four-cylinder gasoline engine that combines the traction and economy of a diesel engine with the return of «aspirated» gasoline. And so that the new product does not have problems with compliance with environmental standards, the MX-5 will nevertheless become a hybrid, but the simplest — with a 48-volt belt starter-generator.
Autocar believes that under the hood of the MX-5 NE series there will be a «aspirated» 2.0 SkyActiv-X, familiar from Mazda3 and MX-30, but you should not count on 190 horsepower and 240 Nm of torque on all versions — depending on the tuning modification may differ. The addition of a starter generator will also affect the unit’s calibration as Mazda will need to tweak the Kinetic Energy Recovery and Start / Stop systems. However, engineers will not try to please environmentalists at any cost, since the MX-5 is a niche model, and its sales do not have much impact on the average carbon dioxide emissions for the model range.
In terms of looks, the next generation MX-5 won’t look overly aggressive, but the cabin will feature more refined materials, a digital instrument cluster and advanced electronics. However, Mazda intends to leave the petrolheads with the option of choosing a manual transmission.
British journalists believe that the new Mazda MX-5 can not be expected until 2024, and the marketing strategy of the current ND generation roadster confirms their rightness. Last weekend, Mazda unveiled a lightweight MX-5 990S with a curb weight of just 990 kilograms. They managed to save money by relying on forged aluminum discs, abandoning conventional brakes in favor of Brembo sports mechanisms, as well as by dismantling noise and vibration damping materials.
The 132-strong (152 Nm) 1.5-liter «aspirated» engine is preserved under the hood, and the thrust is transmitted to the rear axle through a 6-speed «mechanics». It is especially noted that after a decrease in unsprung masses by four kilograms, the calibration of the electric power steering, shock absorbers and springs was changed, and the electronic engine control unit was reconfigured. In addition, the MX-5 990S has an electronic imitation of the rear differential lock — over time, this system will appear on all Mazda sports cars. But a more powerful 2.0-liter MX-5 with similar modifications is not yet planned — such a sports car will inevitably be heavier, and the delicate balance of «lightness and fun» will be violated.
