The Chinese concern Great Wall is preparing to start selling a very economical crossover that combines the advantages of pure electric and gasoline cars. The Macchiato plug-in hybrid under the premium Wey brand has distinguished itself by outstanding performance — an SUV comparable in size and price to the Volkswagen Tiguan can travel on electric traction up to 110 kilometers and consumes only 0.8 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers in the combined cycle!

The secret to economy is to use

The curb weight of the Wey Macchiato PHEV is not given, but the peak output is known — 268 horsepower and 410 Nm! In the most uneconomical mode, the novelty exchanges 100 kilometers per hour in 7.2 seconds, that is, the hybrid cannot be called slow. However, Great Wall engineers thought primarily about fuel efficiency, because even the drivetrain in the usual sense is not on the Macchiato PHEV.

The series-parallel hybrid installation is «sharpened» for city driving, because at low speeds the front axle is rotated by an electric motor, and the «atmospheric» works in the generator mode. The connection of a gasoline engine takes place during intensive acceleration, and the simplest scheme is used with a clutch and a two-stage gearbox. One should not expect miracles on the track from Wey Macchiato PHEV, but even in this mode, the novelty is able to surprise with active aerodynamics — the blinds behind the radiator grill open only after a command from the temperature sensor.

The Lemon DHT architecture does not imply mechanical all-wheel drive, and the power plant with an electric motor in the Macchiato rear axle drive has not yet been put in place. The Great Wall did not bother with a special design for a plug-in hybrid — you can only recognize the novelty from the outside by an additional hatch in the right rear fender and another nameplate on the fifth door.

All the advantages of the usual moderate Macchiato hybrid (with a structurally identical power plant, but a less powerful electric motor and a 1.7 kilowatt-hour battery), the rechargeable analogue retained. Buyers can count on the absence of a central tunnel in the back, a flat trunk floor, a trapezoidal screen of a virtual «tidy», an uncontested projection display, a multifunction steering wheel with touch buttons and a digital interior mirror. Traditionally, there are «premium» options like a panoramic roof, multicontour seats and leather interior trim.

At the moment, Wey Macchiato costs in China from 145,800 to 159,800 yuan (from 1.6 to 1.8 million rubles). Most likely, the plug-in hybrid will be rated comparable to the «moderate» top version. The price list at Great Wall will be announced at the end of the month, and sales will begin at the same time. To convince the Chinese of the reliability of the new system, Great Wall offers a lifetime warranty on the powertrain and electrical components, while the vehicle’s warranty is five years or 150,000 kilometers.
