I understand that going to the bakery in a taxi in the evening in a T-shirt and shorts, you are one hundred percent sure that nothing can happen to your car in these 20 minutes. But even a banal replacement of a punctured wheel in the evening coolness of 10 degrees will make you thoroughly reconsider your beliefs. I’m not talking about colder weather. Just slip your old hat and sweater into one of the boot pockets. This minimum is already enough to work near the car with comfort and without health consequences.

Individual heat retainers are, of course, scaled for the type of trip. If you often go «to a long distance», especially on lightly loaded roads, you should not only have warm clothes with you, but also a blanket. If the car does not start (that is, the stove does not work), and you will have to wait for help for a long time, wrapping yourself in a blanket will be an extremely effective way to stay warm in winter.

Trifle? Perhaps. Only when you have to stop in a forest or field in the evening, in order to scout the road ahead, or just go to the wind, will you radically change your mind.

No, not that keychain and not built into your compressor. And the phone won’t work. Have a headlamp in your car. There is nothing worse than performing even the simplest repair operations with one hand, while the other frantically trying to direct the light in the right direction. And take my word for it, you won’t be able to put “so that it shines where you need it” (the same phone number). And if it works out, then it will certainly fall, and in addition to problems with the car, you will also take care of replacing the screen. Today, Asian megamalls sell an astronomical number of headlights options, and they cost a penny. Let such a flashlight always roll around in your back door pocket. It will not take up space, but on the first occasion you will fully appreciate its functionality.

When buying a forehead, I strongly advise you to choose one with a lens focusing function (they do not differ from the usual ones at a price). Even super-bright, but diffused light will not help to make out the place of the leak in the corners of the engine compartment. But with focusing, the beam will be able to hit a point, which is extremely useful.

Traveling or just rolling around new places? Perfectly! Put a can of fuel (pre-filled) into the trunk before driving out. Small, 5 liters. It is clear that you have estimated the number and location of gas stations on the way, but it so happens that the calculated refueling point will be closed. Or even two. A five-liter bottle will not take up much space, but in a critical situation you will be incredibly happy that you have it.

For long runs, it is better to have a ten-liter. From recent personal experience, one came in handy for me on the paid section of the M-11 from Tver to the turn to Nizhny Novgorod. The approximate length of this section is 370 km. Which accounts for one gas station. I suppose there is no need to explain what is happening on it during the tourist season — this is about an hour of wasted time. In addition to it, along the road, there are still some mobile points with gasoline for bottling — but somehow I did not want to refuel there. In general, the additional ten liters of gasoline then helped me out a lot.

The canister must be equipped with a filling spout. Many fuel filler necks have a spring-loaded shutter that covers the filler opening. For the normal flow of fuel, it must be «pushed» with a funnel or canister nose. Otherwise, everything that is poured will pour out, and a tenth of it will go into the tank. In general, don’t refuel.

If the route runs not only on asphalt. Experienced jeepers say that if you have a shovel, you can go anywhere on your own, it’s just a matter of time. And they are right. But even if you do not plan to conquer swamps and forest clearings, then you can quite easily sit down in a car or crossover in an ordinary muddy country track.

Surely you will like the compact folding version of the «pocket» sapper shovel. So you should know: this device is completely useless with a stuck car. In the vast majority of cases, to free a car from off-road captivity, it is required to dig under the wheels (more precisely, not only and not so much under them), but under the bottom. A small spatula just won’t reach there. Take with you a full-fledged shovel with a shaft of at least 80-90 cm. Otherwise, to get to the middle of the bottom, you will have to dig while lying in the mud.

The shovel must be accompanied by a rope. And not the one for 3 rubles that is put in the «set of a motorist», but a normal one. Normal is one that can withstand at least 2 times the weight of your vehicle. For cars it is at least 3 tons, for crossovers — 4, for SUVs — from 5. The fact is that the usual cable from the set is a towing cable. And designed for towing your car in ideal conditions of level asphalt. But to remove a stuck vehicle from mud or snow, much more effort is required. Moreover, it assumes jerks. Therefore, a dynamic (jerking) line is strictly shown for auto travelers.

Without which the engine will not start or will not be able to work normally. In general, this is a crankshaft position sensor (DPKV), an ignition coil (common or one per plug), a gas pump, the first lambda probe, a set of spark plugs. Of course, it is logical to argue that the engine will not start without a piston or injectors, but we are talking about a minimal gentleman’s set, which is better to always have with you. And even if you have no idea what the words were listed above, then when they drag you to the service, you will be able to show the mechanics this minimum. That already increases the chances of getting it fixed quickly, and not having to go to the hotel for a couple of days until the required sensor is found in the neighborhood.

Also take care of purchasing a spare belt for attachments with idler and idler rollers. This trio should also become a regular participant in long-distance motor rallies.

The above recommendation is the most general one. It is best to spend half a day on the profile forum and add to this list what most often fails on your car model.

I urge you not to «cut», but to immediately purchase a full-fledged suitcase with everything you need for many years. From personal experience, I will say that a set of 90 items should be enough for almost all occasions. Separately, I note that the set must include keys. Because it often happens that the bolt, here it is, is visible, but it is impossible to crawl up to it with the head … The keys will help out.

Just as in the case of a shovel, reassure yourself that a microbox with a set of bits is rolling in the glove compartment — empty. The most you can do with this is to disassemble something in the cabin. If you have to climb under the hood, and even more so into the suspension, the mini-tool has absolutely no chance.

And again from practice. The spare wheel is great. But when on our highways you suddenly hit two at once (for example, having flown out of the blue into a hole with one side), you will have to replace one, and the second will constantly pump up, stopping on the sides. And so a few kilometers (or tens) until you get to the tire fitting.

It is drugs, not rags, which are prescribed to be packed in a first-aid kit according to the current GOST. It all depends on your personal needs and the characteristics of the body, but the basic minimum must always be with you. These are remedies for headaches (or general pain relievers), diarrhea, heart attacks (universal and relatively safe nitroglycerin is suitable), and necessarily antihistamine. For example, even if you have never been allergic to stings, a wasp sting in the neck can cause choking. And in the absence of the availability of qualified medical care, this can be fatal.
